Welcome to the brand-new News site from Oxide Design Co. This is a project we’ve been working on for quite some time, and we’re excited to see it finally launched to the world. Our intention is to use this forum to share design insights, various projects we’re working on, and newsworthy information about Oxide. In the bigger picture, what we really mean this site to accomplish is to pull back the curtain and allow you a view into the inner workings of Oxide. We feel very strongly about our design process and our different way of thinking, and we feel that the best way to let people experience that is to lay everything out on the table for the world to see.

We understand that these days having a blog is by no means novel or cutting-edge. I had lunch a while back with Greg Harris from Quantum Workplace, and we were discussing social media. He said something that really resonated with me: “90% of me is still convinced this whole social media thing is a passing fad, and the other 10% is scared to death that I might be wrong.” I agree wholeheartedly, and indeed the Oxide office still has a running bet on which fad will burn out faster: Twitter or 3-D movies. But all of a sudden, I have a personal Twitter account, Oxide has a Facebook fan page, and we’re launching a blog.

We didn’t dive into the blogosphere at the inception of the trend, because we like to have a well-considered reason for our decisions, rather than simply being hip for hip’s sake. When we communicate at Oxide, it’s not really about the medium. No doubt, new ways of spreading a message will come to replace all the tools we currently use. For us, it’s about opening the shades to let the sunshine in, and sharing our thinking with the world. Because we’re passionate about what we do, and we feel like we come at it from a particularly unique approach. So we hope you’ll join us in the endeavor as we explore the unvarnished, sometimes messy, always heartfelt, process of Oxide. Because as social media success story Gary Vaynerchuk says, “It’s not about polish, it’s about heart.”

  1. Welcome to the giant fad that is the internets.

  2. Nicely articulated, Drew. I was going to make an eloquent observation, but have to confess that I got distracted by the central figure in the montage at the top of this post. Is that George Michael? {Sorry, my next comment will be focused and on topic. For what it is worth, I enjoy the transparency and shared culture that comes with some aspects of social media, including this venture of yours}

  3. I love the lego trio. Quite accurate and representational, if I might add.

  4. Bravo, gentlemen of Oxide! I dig the news feed — and will be reading. Whoever’s got money on 3D movies already won — 3D died 25 years ago (though it seems to have zombie-like reanimation abilities).

    Phil Haussler says: (31 August 2009)
  5. Nice call, Stuart. Oxide is releasing a special-edition LEGO set this Christmas (#8080), featuring: the guy from Flock of Seagulls, George Michael, and Phil Collins.

  6. Next stop, Friendster!
