Children of the Nations website

Since college, I’ve been working on various projects with Sean Sheridan of 4:Minute.Media in Colorado Springs. He wasn’t the first to hire me for my design skills (that would be Clint Carlson — thanks, Clint) but he did give me a chance as a very young designer. I was very excited when he decided to extend our professional relationship to my employment at Oxide. His projects are particularly engaging to work on because they generally support good causes. Together we recently completed a project where Oxide helped build the visuals used to create the new Children of the Nations (COTN) website. COTN was founded in 1995 as a Christian-based organization focused on the care of orphaned and destitute children around the globe. Working in the USA, Dominican Republic, Sierra Leone, Malawi, and Uganda, COTN provides education, medicine, food, clothing, shelter and much more to children in need.

Proposed home page design
After reading a project brief and reviewing the amazing photography provided by the client, we knew the website had to be gritty. The background texture we created is similar to walls you would find in these villages, and the torn paper makes it feel handmade. In many of the places COTN serves, running water, bathrooms, and electricity are rare for the area.
Oxide’s job was to create the design for the home page, letting COTN run with the rest. Occasionally, we’re brought on to a project to create initial visuals which will then be used to build out various other pieces. Although the complete website turned out a little differently than we might have originally imagined it, we are very happy with how well they were able to build upon the design foundation we crafted for them.
